about

Michael Gary Dean arrives with the second edition of the "Abandoned Pianos" project, composed after his departure to live in Europe in 2019.

This next chapter investigates new feelings of nostalgia and a longing for familiarity while flirting with themes of death and loss. Each composition carefully balances moments of mental endurance intertwined with a certain peace and stillness. Certainly, this is a collection for solo listening, echoing darker feelings that accompany uncomfortable moments.

Due to Dean's life circumstances, many of the pieces were only completed during long periods without speaking to anyone else, sometimes for weeks at a time. Though some of the initial piano ideas were composed in the final days (and even hours) before a departure from Canada, this collection of works fully emerged from a particularly challenging year that followed.

"In a new environment, I felt obligated to take a new and honest look at certain anxieties and fears I have been dragging around, and to start to dig some of the dirt out of the cracks. 'Abandoned Pianos II' is strongly influenced by that process, by being unexpectedly faced with past traumas I've neglected to address or that I've refused to acknowledge that have now built up over time.

Overall, these pieces further adopt influences from my experience in electronic music, embracing atmosphere and extra-imaginary listening spaces. The result is something dark, airy and sometimes 'free', swinging back and forth between anxiety and ecstasy while experiencing a rediscovery of the self". -- Michael Gary Dean

"Abandoned Pianos" is a collection of music for computer-controlled pianos, composed for the Yamaha Disklavier player pianos.
